âŠī¸Hagakure
âIn the words of the ancients, one should make his decisions within the space of seven breaths.â - Lord Naoshige
VII Breaths
The VII Breaths Substack is a space for explorers and change makers. I want to share my reflections, stories, and insights. It will incorporate my passions, BJJ, Wellbeing & Music.
On the mat, On the couch, On the beat.
Iâve been trying to listen to my emotions while staying present. Hagakure - The Book of the Samurai by Yamamoto Tsunetomo intrigued me from the first time I read it. The code of the samurai and its focus on decision-making resonated with me, inspiring the name VII Breaths.
Through the medium of martial arts and as a therapist, my interest in the power of Breath sparked interest and exploration. As part of my mindfulness and meditation practice, I've been using the Mindfulness app on my watch. One day whilst doing a quick one-minute breathing exercise, there it was again: 7 Breaths
Mindfulness is about being fully present, some describe it as an intentional âmoment by momentâ awareness. Often the mind can wander unconsciously to the thoughts about the past and future. Iâve found BJJ and music to be two ways to experience being in the here and now. I also feel attitudes like gratitude, curiosity, and acceptance help me to let go of constraints that keep me restricted. Of course in the chaotic world we exist, this is a constant challenge. When things get difficult, remember to breathe.
âBreath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.â - Thich Nhat Hang
