Welcome to my new content for VII Breaths. Music is a passion, and I think this format will allow space to share tunes and stories, plus have some interesting conversations.

So the first drop is 7 mins of VII Breaths (001). It’s going to be bitesize music segments for your listening pleasure. Going forward I plan to do some longer interview conversations, but let’s just get started…

Sound Signals

The quick mix starts with a track off the Craig Smith presents ‘Sound Signals: Soul Searching’. album.

Craig is primarily known for his Deep House production and DJing, whilst Saleem (Eh Wun / A1) is a producer stalwart across many genres. Signals are Craig Smith & Saleem McGroarty, who hail from Edinburgh, Scotland have crafted an Instrumental Hip Hop album that’s a crate-digging gem.

I can see clearly now

A song of hope & courage for individuals who have experienced adversity but have found a way to overcome it.

I’m glad you’re mine

Al Green is an Icon.

Al Green’s soul is woven into the DNA strands of hip-hop. The emotion in his music is why he has been heavily sampled through the ages.

Biggie sampled the above song for ‘I Got a Story to Tell’, ‘What’s Beef’ and ‘Dead Wrong’, as did Eric B & Rakim for ‘Mahogany’.

Both of these records were in the treasure trove of my Dad’s record collection. I heard an array of soul music growing up. But only after his passing did I fully get to delve deeper into his eclectic archive.

Body Rock

Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey), Tash (from Tha Alkaholiks) & Q-Tip (ATCQ)

This was (and still is) an absolute B-Boy/B-Girl classic!

In The Flesh

From the West Coast, Jurassic 5 were part of the alternative Hip-Hop movement of the 90’s. In The Flesh is the first track on the record, but many people are most familiar with Concrete Schoolyard.

I had the privilege of being the support act for J5 when they came to Edinburgh to tour the record. They were amazing live and a great group of guys. I would later go on to collaborate with Akil the MC
